    Hello!

    I have come across an abbreviation that I am curious about. The abbreviation is DTR. I have looked it up on Stedman’s and 2 items come up under that abbreviation. Deep tendon reflex and Dietetic Technician Registered.

    Is this an abbreviation that needs to be expanded? Do I capitalize each word if it needs to be expanded?

    Hi Tanya,

     

    Deep tendon reflex would be the most common usage of DTR, but it will depend on the context of the report and your sentence. Since our account specifics ask us to expand only disease-related abbreviations in the Impression/Diagnosis/Assessment, we would not expand DTR when referring to a deep tendon reflex.

     

    When expanding abbreviations, only expand a word within it if it’s the 1st word in a sentence or if one of the words is a proper noun, such as an eponym, and you would normally capitalize it anyway. Otherwise, do not capitalize the words when you expand. Book of Style 9.2.2 has more information.
